Conservatories & Orangeries

What is the difference between a Conservatory and an Orangery?

Conservatories and Orangeries are very similar. There are two main differences - a Conservatory will have a pitched roof made primarily with glass. An Orangery has a flat, solid roof with a glass 'lantern' in the centre. Orangeries were originally designed in the 17th century as a way to grow exotic fruits in Northern Europe - a colder climate not generally suited for this purpose. To this end, they are made primarily of brick, to prevent temperature fluctuations. They were named 'Orangeries' as people did use them to grow oranges.

Conservatories, on the other hand, were designed to add extra living space and are made with a lot more glass than an Orangery. Either option will give you the benefit of added living space. In modern times, the choice you make is more down to your personal preference in terms of the finished look.

In the sections below, we'll look at the benefits to both Conservatories and Orangeries.

No Complicated Planning Permission

Although building regulations apply to most extensions, conservatories are generally exempt, provided that a few rules are followed - things like: they must be built at ground level, have a floor area of 30 square foot or less, be separated from the main house by external walls, windows and doors and meet the relevant energy, electrical and glazing regulations.

We can help you to make sure that your new build meets all of the needed rules and regulations. For orangeries we apply for a building notice a few days before we start, the customer pays the fee to the council and then we start the work and have inspections from the council. Planning permission is not required.

A cost effective way of increasing the room in your house

Building a Conservatory or Orangery is much more cost effective than moving to a bigger house. It is also far less time-comsuming and less complicated than moving.

A Conservatory or Orangery can help create a new office space, dining room, a children’s playroom, or whatever else you can think of.

Additionally, it will increase the value of your home so that if you decide to move in the future, you get a better return on your investment.

FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a conservatory comfortably all year round?

Modern glazing, insulated roofs, and efficient doors make year-round use possible. Many homeowners add blinds, underfloor heating, or upgraded roofing systems to fine-tune comfort in extreme seasons.

Will a conservatory feel like a natural extension of my home?

Yes — with the right design choices. Matching brickwork, colour-coordinated frames, and integrated lighting help the new space blend seamlessly with your existing property rather than feeling like a bolt-on.

How long does a conservatory installation usually take?

Most builds take a few weeks from groundwork to completion, depending on size and complexity. Orangeries, which involve more structural work, typically take a little longer.

What are the best glazing options for reducing glare and heat?

SolarControl glass, tinted glazing, and low-emissivity coatings help manage heat and sunlight. These options are especially useful for south-facing gardens where summer temperatures can rise quickly.

Will adding a conservatory increase my home’s value?

In many cases, yes. A well-designed conservatory or orangery adds usable floor space, improves natural light, and enhances overall appeal — all of which can positively influence resale value.
